Golden state lives up to its name

When Sailaja reached out about a couple's photo shoot at The Cliffs in Pismo Beach, everything seemed to be lining up to make for some magical photos. The evening before had a spectacular clear sunset, so it seemed fair to believe the next day would be more of the same. But, a theme you'll notice frequently in these blogs, you never know what sort of weather you're going to get on the Central Coast, ESPECIALLY during the summer.

The morning started off fine but as the day went on the marine layer off the coast slowly inched towards land. By midday, it was a 50/50 bet as to whether we'd have sunlight or not by the evening. So we made the call to move 3.8 miles up the coast to Avila Beach where on this particular day (and many others) the fog just didn't seem to reach.

Since we got a late start, we only had about 20 minutes of sunset before we lost our golden light, so we got to shooting. And wow- did we get some lovely photos of a beautiful couple!

After the sun has gone

Everyone wants that beautiful, golden light. It makes those pictures really pop and captures that California gold that our state is known for. But- once the sun goes down, that light is gone. It's up to the photographer and subjects to make some magic- which is pretty easy when you're in a location like Avila Beach and you have a playful couple who are open to seeing what works.

No Pier pressure

Both Sailaja and Praneeth were excited to try to get some pictures with the Avila pier, and so was I. The actual pier itself was closed for repairs (supposedly it will be open again sometime in late 2024, but we'll see), but we were free to take some photos under the pier and along side it. This gave Sailaja a chance to try out her Vogue poses too.

In the end

We left the beach with sandy feet (still trying to get sand out of my car) and a session of some beautiful couples portraits. It was an honor to be asked to capture a moment in time with this lovely, kind couple during their trip to the Central Coast.
